How Does Solar Work?

Thinking about making the switch to solar energy? We’re excited for you! If you’ve read any of our other blog posts, you know that there are a lot of benefits to solar energy. You’re probably doing a lot of research in order to make sure the decision to go solar is right for you, and what to expect from the process. We’re here to help! One of the first steps in choosing to switch to solar is to understand what your solar energy system is going to do. Read on for a summary of how solar actually works!

As you’ve probably figured out, solar panels absorb energy from the sun. After all, that is kind of the point! The sunlight on the solar panels is absorbed through photovoltaic cells. The sunlight causes electrons in the cells to move, creating an electrical current, which is collected through the wiring of your arrangement. This is DC, or direct current, energy. A crucial part of your solar energy system are inverters. The inverters convert that DC energy to AC, or alternating current, energy. This is the kind of energy that most homes use, the kind that will work with your appliances and other electricity-using items. If you’re curious, you can learn more about AC energy and DC energy here, with How Stuff Works!

Once your solar energy system has produced the AC energy, it will direct the energy to your home through your home’s electrical panel, allowing you to use the energy in your electrical appliances. It is important to note that you are still connected to the grid. Being connected to the grid allows you to take advantage of net metering. With net metering, excess power produced by your solar energy system is fed back into the electrical grid. In exchange, you receive credits on your electric bill. When there is less sunlight on rainy days and at night, you can draw energy from the grid to suit your needs.
